Discord is implementing age verification measures for all users starting Wednesday, September 25, 2024, despite prior user backlash concerning privacy. The company initially delayed these plans in February due to user concerns, amplified by a past data breach of a third-party vendor that exposed user IDs and photos. Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy stated that expanding age assurance laws globally and regionally necessitated the rollout. However, he clarified that over 90% of users will not need to actively verify their age. Discord will primarily use existing account data, including tenure, device information, and activity patterns, to predict a user's age group. Message content and profile data are not used for this assessment. If the system is unsure about a user's age, alternative verification methods like credit card or app store account data will be offered, though not biometric or ID scans. For adult users, the platform experience will remain unchanged. Teen accounts will face restrictions on age-gated servers and modified message request and friend request notifications.

Discord's reliance on machine learning models trained on aggregate user behavior, rather than direct personal data, represents a significant pivot in how platforms are approaching age verification. This method aims to balance regulatory compliance with user privacy concerns, but its effectiveness hinges on the accuracy of these predictive models and the user's willingness to trust an opaque system. The indirect approach may become a blueprint for other platforms facing similar legal pressures, shifting the burden of proof away from explicit documentation and towards behavioral analysis.
