Google’s AI note-taking app transcribes your meetings completely offline
First reported by The Verge ·
Your meeting notes and transcriptions now stay entirely on your computer, eliminating cloud privacy concerns.
Google has released an experimental, free note-taking application for macOS called Google AI Edge Foresight. This app transcribes meetings and audio files entirely offline, utilizing Google's on-device EmbeddingGemma 2 model. Similar to other AI note-taking tools, Foresight summarizes meetings and allows users to input their own shorthand notes which are then converted into polished notes based on the meeting transcript. The application also features a built-in assistant that can answer questions about the meeting content and can reference connected local files without ever sending data off the user's computer. Currently, Foresight is optimized for Macs with Apple Silicon.
The release of Google AI Edge Foresight signifies a growing trend towards on-device AI processing for productivity tools, directly addressing user concerns about data privacy and security. By keeping sensitive meeting information localized, Google is catering to professionals and organizations wary of cloud-based transcription services, potentially setting a new standard for data handling in this category. This approach could pressure competitors to offer similar offline capabilities or robust privacy assurances to remain competitive.
This move also highlights the increasing maturity of on-device AI models, making complex tasks like real-time transcription and summarization feasible without constant cloud connectivity. As more powerful, efficient models become available for local execution, users can expect enhanced performance and reduced latency in AI-powered applications. The inclusion of a queryable assistant directly on the device further integrates AI into workflows, making it a more immediate and accessible tool for information retrieval and synthesis.
