Morphotonics raises €40M to expand its display tech into data centers

The cost of producing advanced optical components for AR glasses and data centers will decrease.

Morphotonics, a Dutch company specializing in nanoimprint lithography (NIL), has raised €40 million to scale its display manufacturing technology. The funding round, supported by investors including 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries, and the European Investment Bank, will enable Morphotonics to expand its operations and enter the data center market. The company, which has developed its NIL process over 12 years, manufactures displays for augmented reality glasses, privacy screens, and other optics by using a "stamp" to create patterns on photosensitive materials. This technology is crucial for waveguide production in smart glasses, a market projected to reach 12.2 million shipments by 2030. Morphotonics also plans to apply its NIL technology to optical components for data centers, specifically for co-packaged optics utilizing Photonic Integrated Circuits, a sector where it has secured customer validation but has not yet shipped machines. The company has grown its headcount to 60 employees and aims to reach 70-75, with significant manufacturing presence in Asia and the U.S.

Morphotonics' successful funding round signals growing investor confidence in advanced lithography techniques beyond traditional semiconductor manufacturing. The expansion into data centers, particularly for co-packaged optics, highlights a significant opportunity for NIL technology to address the increasing demand for high-speed data transfer driven by AI and cloud computing.
