Ocean surveillance startup Quartermaster raises another $140M

Real-time ocean data capabilities are now available to commercial fleets, improving maritime safety and efficiency.

Ocean surveillance startup Quartermaster has secured $140 million in a Series B funding round, significantly larger than its previous $43 million Series A. The funding was led by Insight Partners, with participation from new investor Overmatch Ventures and existing backers. An additional $40 million came from a debt facility provided by Stifel. Quartermaster develops "SmartMast" hardware, integrating cameras and radios onto ships to capture real-time maritime data. This offers more comprehensive insights than traditional Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking, providing awareness of vessel activity, congestion, and potential incidents. The company has deployed over 800 SmartMast units to more than 650 vessels across 25 countries, with demand increasing due to global geopolitical events impacting maritime trade.

The substantial Series B funding highlights a growing market appetite for advanced maritime intelligence beyond basic AIS tracking. Quartermaster's approach, leveraging weather-hardened sensors and AI for real-time data, addresses a significant gap in oceanic awareness. This positions the company as a key player in a sector ripe for technological disruption, driven by increasing geopolitical instability and the need for better visibility in global shipping.

This development suggests a broader trend towards sophisticated, sensor-driven data solutions for previously underserved industries.
