OpenAI takes on Microsoft with the launch of what feels a whole lot like ChatGPT’s own office suite

Shared workspaces within ChatGPT can now store and co-edit documents and AI-generated content, bypassing traditional office software.

OpenAI has introduced a suite of new ChatGPT features that directly challenge Microsoft's dominance in workplace software. At its Dev Day conference, the company unveiled 'Space,' a collaborative workspace within ChatGPT where users can work with AI agent personas called 'Dots' on various tasks. CEO Sam Altman described Spaces as dynamic environments where pages and files are organized similarly to a drive, but with an interactive element. OpenAI also launched 'Pages,' a new document type designed for human and AI collaboration, intended to compete with word processors like Google Docs and Microsoft Word by enabling writing, research, image generation, and data visualization. Additionally, the company announced 'collaborative slides,' a feature for creating presentation slides through voice commands within ChatGPT, allowing multiple users and agents to edit and comment.

OpenAI's new offerings signal a significant push into the productivity software market, traditionally dominated by Microsoft. By integrating collaborative document editing, AI agent interactions, and presentation creation directly into ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to become a central hub for knowledge work.
