Shopify debuts Canvas, a way to build online stores by chatting with AI

Shopify has launched Canvas, a new tool that allows merchants to build their online stores by interacting with an AI named Sidekick. Previously, Shopify's site builder was a no-code tool requiring users to rearrange modular sections and blocks within a chosen theme, with more complex changes needing code edits or a developer. With Canvas, merchants can now simply chat with Sidekick to create their store, seeing real-time visual updates of the changes. This tool renders the actual code, enabling merchants to test interactivity, animations, and responsive design across different screen sizes. Sidekick also captures screenshots to mirror the merchant's view as the site updates.
