The Copilot+ PC brand is dead

The 'Copilot+ PC' marketing label is being retired for AI-enabled Windows machines.

Microsoft and its PC manufacturing partners are phasing out the 'Copilot+ PC' branding for Windows 11 devices. Introduced in 2024 with Qualcomm, the Copilot+ PC category established a baseline for AI-first computers featuring specific hardware requirements, like a 45 TOPS NPU. However, the brand faced immediate backlash due to security concerns surrounding its flagship feature, Recall, which was delayed and later shipped without meeting its initial promises. This negative reception led PC makers and Microsoft itself to quietly reduce its use in marketing and product names. Recent Surface PCs, for example, no longer carry the Copilot+ PC moniker, though they still meet the underlying hardware specifications for AI experiences. Industry figures, including Microsoft's Surface CVP Brett Ostrum and Qualcomm's SVP Kedar Kondap, acknowledge that while the hardware standards remain, the specific terminology is being dropped, suggesting the market did not resonate with the 'Copilot+ PC' brand.

The discontinuation of the 'Copilot+ PC' brand signals a shift away from specific marketing labels for AI-enhanced hardware.
