The smart home graveyard is getting crowded

Smart home devices are increasingly becoming unusable paperweights after manufacturers discontinue their cloud services.

Weber, the company that acquired smart oven maker June, has shut down the oven's app and cloud services. This renders the $1,495 June Oven, once a symbol of high-end smart cooking, largely inoperable beyond basic heating functions. Users lose app control, software updates, and AI-powered cooking features. This follows a trend of 'smart home graveyard' entries, including Nest Secure, early Nest Thermostats, and various smart appliances and devices from brands like Belkin, Neato, Logitech, Bose, and Sengled. While some devices retain basic functionality, the loss of connectivity and support renders many effectively useless, turning them into e-waste. Weber cited the integration of June's intellectual property into its own Weber Connect platform as a reason for not open-sourcing the technology.

The current business model for smart home devices, which often relies on cloud infrastructure, is proving unsustainable for long-term product viability. As startups age and are acquired, larger companies are less likely to maintain the costly cloud services for older products, leading to premature obsolescence. This cycle suggests a market correction is needed, pushing manufacturers towards more robust, future-proof designs that prioritize local control and offline functionality, potentially through standards like Matter, Zigbee, or Thread.

The trend highlights a critical need for consumer protection legislation and manufacturer responsibility in designing for device end-of-life. Without mandates for local APIs or clear support timelines, consumers face significant financial loss and electronic waste. The future of the smart home hinges on a shift from cloud-dependent 'disposable' gadgets to resilient devices that maintain core functionality independently of a manufacturer's continued cloud investment or corporate decisions.
