Windows 11 tries new shortcuts for Xbox gaming mode and search

If you game on Windows, quick-access settings in gaming mode now require fewer clicks.

Microsoft has introduced new shortcuts and enhanced search capabilities in the latest Windows 11 Insider builds (Beta Build 26220.9836 and Experimental Build 26340.9843). The updates include streamlined controls within Xbox gaming mode, allowing users to manage Bluetooth, WiFi, and power settings without leaving the mode. Search functionality has been significantly expanded, offering filters for files, actions, and web results. Users can now perform system actions like adjusting brightness or volume directly from the search bar, and even interact with connected phones for tasks such as making calls. Search results provide richer details, including file modification dates and authors, and can display visual data like stock charts and weather forecasts. Additionally, users can provide feedback on search results via thumbs-up/thumbs-down icons to improve future performance.

These enhancements signal Microsoft's ongoing effort to refine the Windows user experience, particularly for gamers and power users. By integrating more system controls and detailed information directly into the search interface, Microsoft aims to reduce context switching and improve efficiency. The ability to perform actions and receive rich, actionable data from search transforms it from a simple lookup tool into a more dynamic command center. This also reflects a broader trend of operating systems becoming more proactive and integrated with user workflows.

The inclusion of user feedback mechanisms for search, such as thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons, suggests a commitment to AI-driven personalization and continuous improvement. This data could be used to fine-tune search algorithms, making them more relevant to individual user needs over time. For users, this means search could become increasingly accurate and helpful, anticipating needs and providing tailored information and actions more reliably.
