TikTok’s US arm joins Lantern, a cross-platform child safety initiative

Sharing of child safety signals becomes more comprehensive with TikTok's addition to the Lantern initiative.

TikTok's U.S. division has joined Lantern, a cross-platform child safety initiative. Launched in 2023, Lantern enables social media companies to share information about harmful behavior and content to identify and track bad actors across different platforms. TikTok USDS Joint Venture joins a roster of major tech companies already participating, including Google, X, Snap, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple. This collaboration aims to strengthen coordinated efforts against child sexual exploitation and abuse. In addition to joining Lantern, TikTok's U.S. unit is donating $2 million to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to help modernize its CyberTipline. This NCMEC project, with a total goal of $10 million, involves developing advanced tools for faster harm detection and processing of reports to law enforcement.

TikTok's U.S. entity's integration into Lantern signifies a growing industry consensus on the necessity of collaborative approaches to online child safety. By sharing threat intelligence, platforms can more effectively disrupt the activities of malicious actors who exploit the porous boundaries between different digital spaces.
